Fergus Patrick O'Neill has rapidly established himself as one of Australian domestic cricket’s most dangerous seam bowlers — not through raw, eye-watering speed, but through relentless accuracy, clever seam movement, and match-winning instincts. Born in Tauranga, New Zealand, O'Neill moved to Victoria at a young age and came up through the Melbourne Premier Cricket system. His performances in club cricket signalled early promise: during one Premier season, he claimed 57 wickets at an average of around 18. The 2001-born seamer made his List A debut for Victoria in the Marsh One-Day Cup in March 2022, before graduating to the Sheffield Shield in the 2022-23 season. However, the 2023-24 season was his breakout year. O'Neill finished as Victoria’s top fast bowler, taking 40 wickets at about 17.25. His haul included a ten-wicket match (five in each innings) in Victoria’s win over South Australia. That year, he also won a clutch of awards: Shield Player of the Year for his state, and the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year. The 2001-born bowler can lay claim to being the best seamer in Sheffield Shield cricket for the past two seasons (2023-24 and 2024-25).
